It's aere's 4th birthday / anniversary!

A special date for aere.

aere's fourth birthday since the date of its launch of the very first collection on 28th October 2014.

I blogged about aere turning 3 last year and so, so much has happened ever since. On aere's 3rd birthday last year we had aere's first fashion show in Singapore at the Singapore Fashion Week showcasing the CHANGE collection and this year around the same time we had a show but in a different way. We showcased our first aereMEN workwear and casual wear collection through a collaboration with RUFFEDGE called the aereMEN x RUFFEDGE collection. It wasn't a fashion show per se but we debuted a collection in Singapore at Ruffedge's concert! After that just 2 days ago we had a meet-and-greet and it was definitely another milestone for aere. All the looks worn at the concert in Singapore by the 6 members of Ruffedge: Amer Munawwer, Azan Adin, Cat Farish, Mode, Sein and Zain Hamid were all from the #aereMENxRUFFEDGE collection.

"CHANGE. In 2016, I was at National Gallery Singapore not even knowing what the future beholds. In 2017, aere had its first fashion show at the same amazing venue. Things and circumstances can definitely change drastically and dramatically in one year. For aere and me, personally. May this year change even more drastically in a positive direction."

Definitely. It's the same thing. Change is definitely constant. Looking at where I am now, I definitely didn't know what the future had in store for me. As I've blogged about in my previous posts I need to focus on my health now so because of that, the things that I might have easily done before became impossible for me to do. I wasn't there for the aereMENxRUFFEDGE debut in Singapore at Ruffedge's concert, I had to call off aere's KLFW show this year due to my health reasons and I was in the hospital for 3 weeks during the whole time KLFW was going on. It might all look pretty negative but I believe God is making a drastic change in my life in a positive direction because finally I've given focus to my health. Change is not easy sometimes. Accepting change can be even harder. Especially when you have to let go of something that you are so passionate about and love so much. But there comes a time when you have to prioritise and choose which one is more important and which ones you can live without. And right now, the focus for me is to take care of my health that I have been neglecting the past few years.

I have so many things I want to write about but I have to keep this short as I cannot sit down for too long and blogging and I really want to post this out today. I want to thank YOU and everyone who has supported, worn and loved aere in all the different ways. Please read aereTURNS3 with YOU. I just read it again and watched the videos that I posted in that entry as a message to all aere lovers and I meant every single word till this very day. I even did an aereTURNS3 Special. Stay tuned to aere's IG because something special is coming your way on the 30th October 2018 in conjunction with aere's birthday and its MASSIVE. You really would not want to miss the 1-day special.

Since after we went to Singapore in October 2017 during aere's 3rd birthday, we have really been places, unexpectedly. We soared our wings where the winds took us. aere was the only Malaysian brand to be invited to Dubai at the Dubai Modest Fashion Week in December 2017. A few months after that in February 2018, we had our first fashion show in London at the London Modest Fashion Week 2018 and our third time exhibiting at Pure London. And right after that in March we went to our second fashion show in Dubai and also participated in a trade show exhibition. I also managed to fit in a short mentorship course with Rabia Z in the midst of all that while I was in Dubai.

In between it all, I managed to squeeze in a number of OOTDs in the form of photos and videos in Dubai, London and KL and since it's aere's special day today, I just wanted to share this video featuring my looks in aere captured in London, Dubai and KL this past year.

In this post, I am wearing some of my favourite pieces from the CHANGE collection as showcased in KLFW, Singapore Fashion Week October 2017 and exhibited at Dubai Modest Fashion Week and also pieces from the PEACE collection which was showcased at our first show in Dubai December 2017 and our second fashion show in Dubai in March 2018. Personally for me, the CHANGE collection really has to be one of my most favourite collections that I have ever done and I am very proud of it as it's been showcased in Singapore, London and Dubai. BTW, the entire CHANGE collection is now on 50% off. No need to thank me. This is for you! And no, this is not even the big 1-day special surprise we have in store for you. You really have to stay tuned for that.

We also had our Eid fashion show right after that at Publika with Fashion Valet and our first show at the Ritz Hotel with Modvier and we featured our first aere Scarves this year together with matching Eid pieces for men and kids. And then of course, we just launched our aere collaboration with Ruffedge featuring workwear and casual wear for the gentlemen.

Alhamdulillah. All praises to the Almighty for all these opportunities and blessings for aere. I've been unwell recently but I am blessed with an amazing aere TEAM who made sure that the production and everything else behind the scenes have gone smoothly and really really really well and I'm also grateful for all of my understanding partners while I'm still on medical leave.

aere is a year older. Wow. Just letting it sink in. I can't believe it's been four years since I started this brand from scratch with the help of so many people (I can't even begin to name them) who each have been an important part of this journey with me from the start. aere will always have a special place in my heart. It is a brand I built from scratch with my own sweat, blood, bones, tears and smiles and the support of all those around me. All praises to the Almighty for giving me the strength for the past few years to build aere, despite my health conditions. I have given aere my all, until I literally have nothing else to give but my love and support due to my health conditions. Please do give your continuous support to aere. If one day I am no longer around, I hope aere will continue to survive with your support. That said, for now although I have been and still am on medical leave, I don't plan on going anywhere, don't you worry. Let's see what the future holds for us. But don't ask me what's going to happen because I can't even guess what's going to happen to myself what more what's going to be in store for the next year!

[kneok writes] The Professionals : aereMEN x RUFFEDGE

Hi guys, its me, kneok. I'm back!

In this day and age of insta-whining and moaning, it can be quite hard to believe that there are people who actually love their professions. Being a lawyer is a calling that I absolutely love and am very passionate about, so my wife asked me to pen a piece as a guest writer on her blog. Much obliged, my Lady.

It might have been mentioned once or twice or a million times, this pretty lady was a pretty accomplished lawyer back in the day. She's also a model consummate professional, always going over and beyond and giving 4540% at everything she does, which is how aere got this far.

"I can't hear you counsel, your hair is too loud." "No it's not".

A lawyer to me means being a problem-solver, a peace-maker, defender of the weak and downtrodden, an advocate of the voiceless and providing a necessary service that however much maligned and the butt of jokes, is still essential and much needed in society. Money has never been a huge motivation for me. One of the most rewarding things of being a lawyer is simply just being able to help people and influence their lives in a positive way.

Of course, I am not the only one and this also doesn't apply to lawyers only. To all of the hard-working professionals of whatever vocations who remain nameless, faceless and those who go beyond their job scopes and gets up and about doing their jobs with a huge sense of responsibility regardless of gratitude or recognition, you are all shining beacons of your industries. It's easy to tell the people who are really passionate about what they do. Those who ooze passion, dedication and commitment in their work without saying a word, those who take pride and take their tasks and responsibilities seriously as a matter of course and not just doing things half-heartedly, and another telling sign is when you ask them about their work and what they do - they light up instantly. Sure, every job is hard in their own way - everyone deals with lots of crap and shit they could do without and everyone loves a good whine and moan now and then, but listen to people talk about their work and you can definitely tell.

We each have different talents and roles to play in society. Once you know your role, work hard and be brave to carry out your responsibilities, irrespective of challenges, criticisms and cynicisms that will inevitably come your way. Speaking for myself, being a lawyer is tough stuff. To have knowledge of the law, to advocate with enough style to try and persuade the judge to accept your arguments instead of the opponents, and to be presentable and courteous in doing so, when all you want to do is to throw the heavy bundles of documents across the bar and/or strangle the opponent. Like I said, really hard.

Despite the challenges though, I take pride in my profession and I am deadly serious about my work and what I do - but those who know me, know that I really don't take my self seriously. In two weeks I will complete a decade in legal practice. A frigging ten years. Nantikan comeback concert kneok ya. But the longer I remain in this world, the more I am aware that I now have another role to play: to become a role model for younger lawyers: to impart wisdom and traditions handed down to me by my masters and teachers for the next generation. It's a role that comes naturally to me, I can spend hours and hours talking about the law and the legal profession, so much that you couldn't pay me to shut up even if you wanted to, to encourage anyone who has an inkling of interest in law and to discourage anyone who thinks of leaving it.

As a lawyer you must master the art of waiting in Court for long periods doing absolutely nothing without being able to look bored. In court you are often left idle for long long hours, but you must be ready to spring up and stand and think on your feet at a moment's notice. Lucky for me, I mastered my poker face at a very young age

Appearing before court in black and white is one such tradition, albeit a tradition that has slightly been relaxed in recent times. At least here in Malaysia. Nowadays lawyers are permitted to wear other sombre colours in court, such as dark grey or dark/navy blue, and I fully take advantage of that. All of my work suits since day 1 as a lawyer have either been charcoal grey or navy blue. I have never had a single black suit in my wardrobe. When everyone wears black and white, a little difference of colour is all it takes to stand out.

This suit by aereMEN x RUFFEDGE however changed my mind. It's pretty much undeniable that you exude a certain authority and power when you wear a slim and sleek black suit contrasted against a crisp white shirt. You think: lawyer, bodyguard, hitman. That's why black and white is the men's code for glamorous black tie events. Okay, I know some cynics are pointing out it's also synonymous with waiters. But that's okay. Waiters are noble. They also serve.

I've had someone come up to me in Court and ask me where I had this suit tailored. I'm not a professional model so I don't think the pictures taken by my beloved wife does this enough justice (heh heh). But it's hard to believe that this suit is ready-to-wear. It is light, breathable, and tailored fit. It's classic and timeless, but also up-to-date with the modern times with its roped shoulders, single vent, slim lapels and single button. Being presentable in Court is a must, and I must say this suit definitely gives me an edge in that respect.

I have both suits from the aereMEN x RUFFEDGE collection in black and grey. The grey suit is my personal favourite. My wife has been pestering me to take an OOTD when I wear it to Court. But I tell her I can't sayang. Not when I'm working. So she took a quick OOTD before we set out for the aereMEN x RUFFEDGE launch. I only managed to attend the launch because I had a trial on that day but it was vacated, freeing up my afternoon to bring my wife out for her event. One of the many hazards of the profession. You spend months and months preparing for your case, only for it to be adjourned on the flimsiest of reasons and you have to prepare all over again on the next date. Anyway, she wore my navy aereMEN x RUFFEDGE KYLE Shirt which is way oversized for her but she made it work with the collar and cuffs exaggerated over her white aere jacket. She really knows her stuff.

Now THIS is a professional pose. I have much to learn, much much to learn.

Lawyer / bodyguard / hitman / waiter for hire (okay let's wrap this up).

The tradition of wearing black and white in Court originated sometime in the 15th or the 16th century. That's really stood the test of time, innit? I'm told that classic, timeless and yet modern was what the collection is going for. Similar to RUFFEDGE, who have stood the test of time, being titans of their industry for 20 years, and still going strong.

I can only hope and pray I last that long and make my mark in my own industry. And with that, I conclude my professional husband duty for my wife.

Evolution : aereMEN x RUFFEDGE

The aereMEN x Ruffedge collection is a collaboration between two branches of art; fashion and music. The perfect complement to each other, to me, this collaboration really is the best of both worlds.

Both are branches of art which I've fallen in love with since I was a child, and combined, it's just explosive!

I grew up listening to different kinds of music but one of the genre that I fell in love with is R&B and Hip Hop. My first CD that I bought on my own was Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart which I bought in Mexico and the second CD I bought in London in 1996 when I was 12 years old was the Score by The Fugees. The first cassette I ever bought with my own money was One in A Million by the late beautiful Aaliyah. I first fell in love with hip hop and then the multi talented Lauryn Hill when I listened to The Fugees record the whole flight back from London to KL. I have my father to thank for the portable disc player that he gave as a gift for me. Music accompanied me through some of my most difficult, painful moments as well as the good and happy ones growing up and throughout my search trying to understand my own self and identity.

When I started to write this post I wanted to go back and look at the root of this collaboration between fashion and music. It is the first time aere is collaborating with musical individuals or a musical group. Before this aere has collaborated with two luxurious and premium brands, the scarf brand dUCk and an ice cream brand Haagen Dazs. Now, here we are collaborating with a band no less luxurious and premium, Ruffedge.

To be honest, we had other exciting opportunities for collaborations this year but I had to be selective and chose to pursue this one and continued it through despite my recent conditions. Why?

There are some pretty obvious reasons but I was in search of something deeper.

So while I was pondering about it, I went on and searched my blog and found the "music" tag on the right side of this blogpost. I then re-read my first few posts on this blog in April 2009 and was a little surprised that they were mostly about music or more like my music influences when I was younger. In fact, in my very first post I mentioned that I'm a music addict first and foremost, a musicaholic, I labelled myself. But of course, a lot of things have changed since 2009. I mean, a lot! Slowly I stopped sharing about music and have just been writing about everything else. However, even if it wasn't shared here, music never really left me. It has always been with me throughout my life's journey, either me listening to them or singing to them. I also realised about how I haven't been writing about some of the things that I used to share, love and enjoy as much as I would want to 3 years ago and wrote about it in Persistence of Memory.

There was also a time many years ago when I said music was like my medicine in my post My Weekend with Music in Bed where I also shared some lyrics and songs I was feeling at that moment. The best thing about music is that we all have our different influences, and these different influences can some how merge together and form and showcase a part of your personality, and, yes even style.

I realise that fashion and music is something that you can't really separate. Have you ever been to a fashion show without music to set the mood? I haven't. Have you been to a concert where the performers didn't wear any stylish clothes? Nope. For most people, fashion is also related to your favourite music performers. Personally for me, what are the two things that these two branches of art have in common? Both are forms of self-expression. Both evoke feelings and emotions. We choose what music we want to listen to to set or correct the mood or what we want to wear based on how we feel at that time or what occasion. It is sort of intertwined and I realised it even more throughout the period of this collaboration with THE Ruffedge. The talks about this collaboration started in April 2018, 6 months ago and our first meeting was actually on the day of aere Eid fashion show just after we got back from London and Dubai for our fashion shows over there.

Ruffedge and I go way back. As I mentioned I grew up listening to music, I also was brought to musicals and concerts as a kid by my parents. I do remember though my very first concert where my parents allowed me to go without them for the very first time. It was at the All-4-1s concert, I think I was about 13 and the opening act was by another world-class Malaysian band, Innuendo. After that, I remembered during my high school days I did go to a number or R&B and Hip Hop underground gigs. Yeah, you might not have known that part about me when I was younger but I was really just so into it at the time.

I grew up listening to Ruffedge as well as watching them perform at gigs and admiring their talents. I’ve known Ruffedge as multi-talented musicians and creative individuals since my teenage years and they even performed at my 16th birthday party. I used to go to their gigs around KL with some of my best friends. I even remember recording Zain, Sein & Unc Azan with my cassette recorder while they were sort of jamming impromptu outside my house during my teenage years. I also remember doing my matriculation assignment for one of my law courses while I was studying and I interviewed members of ruffedge for the topic that was something about "faith & music" the controversies, the conflicts and how both can merge together. I had so many questions at the time and as always, their individual responses to the questions were very interesting at the time. With Ruffedge, each member has a distinct personality that you can tell from far off. Each have their own voice, their own rhythm, their own groove. They are not some manufactured boybands but deep individuals who each bring something unique to the table.

My point is, with their unique perspective and talents, they’ve been around for more than two decades and as a fellow Malaysian I’m proud to see how far they’ve come. To see them evolve from young artists starting from the underground, then making their way through the industry, establishing their presence and achieving major successes to now seeing them juggling all that as working family men while doing what they are passionate about. More matured, more grown up and wiser insyaAllah. I'm also inspired by their brotherhood and friendship throughout the journey. I'm glad to witness them evolving to the men that they are today. Ruffedge represents something more than just their music. Their image transcends beyond their fashion sense. They carry a positive message and story too. They aim at spreading goodness, love and family values. That is something that I myself and aere as a brand, admire and relate to. When they were asked in an interview for aere’s IG of who they really are behind ruffedge, their most common answers were all family related: a son, a brother, a father, a friend, a husband, a student, an architect and someone even answered orang biasa biasa je (just a normal guy). They aren't primadonnas, divas but humble superstars without any airs.

So, with that, I'm happy that this collaboration is actually happening. Partnering and working with them has been really easy and smooth sailing on the creative side as well as the execution side. In terms of style I thing we just get each other and in terms of cooperation they have been really great too and have gone above and beyond!

aereMEN started 3 years ago, slowly over the years we’ve come out with more and more designs. We’re excited for this even bigger expansion to casual and work wear with the Ruffedge collaboration.

This collaboration is equal part Ruffedge and aere. Their vision of this collaboration is the "Modern Gentleman", or as Amer puts it, "Lelaki Budiman". These fine gentlemen have had a rough ride to reach the top, but they have stayed at the top for 20 years and all that roughness have made them very smooth.

After a decade long hiatus, homegrown vocal group Ruffedge is back with a bang. The #aereMENxRUFFEDGE collection was debuted on an international musical stage recently, marking their 20^th anniversary in Singapore. Having grown in their career and personal life, the six members of the group; Amer Munawer, Azan Addin, Cat Farish, Mode Abdullah, Syed Hussein and Zain Hamid and has taken on a multitude of roles since. This also marks a revolution in their style. Clean, sleek pieces with ease and comfort is at the centre of the collection. From casual to formal wear, the #aereMENxRUFFEDGE collection is perfect for any occasion. Asked to sum up the collection in one sentence, the band put it aptly, “This is the wardrobe of a modern gentlemen.”

aereMEN has previously been part of aere’s Eid collection. The collaboration with Ruffedge marks a new embark for the brand as it expands to a wider range of workwear and casual wear. Working with Ruffedge was an easy decision for aere due to their versatile nature as a band and individuals. Known for their timeless hits and stylish looks, Ruffedge has always pioneered sleek styles for men both in their more formal stage wear and cool street wear. This identity is injected seamlessly into aereMEN’s very own modern, clean aesthetic.

The #aereMENxRUFFEDGE collection was debuted on stage by Ruffedge on 6^th October 2018 in Singapore. The first drop of the collection will be launched TOMORROW on 16^th October 2018.

Unlocking Me

Two years ago, I did a collection called LOVE for aere. The story and the message behind the collection was about reflecting on what we love most, as well as a reminder to love and take care of ourselves. The thing is, I was saying it years ago, trying to spread the positive message through my work but in actual fact what actually happened was that I didn’t really love myself enough to actually take care of my own overall well-being, even though it should have been the focus. I realise that although I think about it a lot, wanting to focus on the things that are actually important for us to continue living, I’ve been going through a lot of pain that no one knows about but I didn't take the actual necessary steps to get better and I’ve always just swept it under the rug. I ignored it, my health, myself till it’s kind of ... too late. The pain that went through my body and the exhaustion that was signalling to me that something needed attention, that something was wrong, but I ignored it and continued to work and live life as though everything was fine, everything was ok. It’s like, I didn’t really practice what I myself had preached or intended to convey. To love yourself, and take good care of yourself so that you will be healthy enough to take care of those whom you love around you. So that you can do what you are meant to do in this life.

I only started to realise this though, that I haven't really taken care of myself just very recently when things got worse. In the beginning of my realisation a few months ago, I was approached for this interesting campaign and the talented director of this campaign asked me intimate and very personal questions about myself as he was trying to unlock who was the real me. Most of the questions asked were so personal that no one actually really asked me before or if they did I've never actually really answered it. He got me to answer these probing questions as he gave me his word that it would just be between me and him and none of it will be used in the campaign without my approval.

It was basically an exercise to unlock myself. Who am I really? Under all the layers that people see me as, who am I? That is the question.

I thought that I knew who I was but as they tried to unlock me with all the questions, I realised it wasn't so easy to answer. Ok yes, my normal and obvious roles are there: I am a slave to God, a wife to my loving, caring and overall amazing husband, a daughter to my ever beloved parents, a mother to my two children in heaven and 2 adorable sons here in this world, a sister to my supportive siblings, friends to my amazing close circle of friends, worker or more of a workaholic, boss and a team mate to my great aere team, a blogger in this personal writing space of mine, instagrammer and all that, things I'm extremely grateful for. I'm still struggling my best to be good or better at the roles that I have right now because I know that sometimes I really suck at some of them, sometimes I screw up and make mistakes too. But, the question is behind all those roles, peeling all these roles layer by layer, who am I really?

What is it that I want? What is it that I really want to do? I took a long hard look at myself, what my hobbies were when I was little, the things that I choose to do and want to do in my free time and the things that make me happy. What were the things that make me at peace without the need for me to share or tell anyone about it? What are the things that I wanted to do but couldn't because of the pressure that I have or imposed on myself due to the many roles, the many hats, the obligations and the responsibilities that I have? There are a lot more questions and this campaign made me really reflect a lot about my own life and with my current state of health it made me reflect upon all this even more.

It is the kind of thing that I feel even the closest ones to me never actually knew the answer and to be honest, I myself didn't have the answer as I never actually gave the time to even actually reflect upon it or even question myself. I was just so busy focusing on what I thought matters most in life. Everything else except what actually matters the most. So, I went through the grilling process a few months ago when I was just about to take a break from work to focus on something that I should have done a long long time ago.

This campaign actually helped me so much in unlocking me and I feel like it is something that we all need to consistently reflect upon. There are times that I'm so sure of who I am, but there are times that I feel just so confused. Especially when I'm going through major changes. Perspective, character, life view can change too as we go through the different phases of life, the different experiences, the good and more so, the bad ones.

So yes, I finally did it. I decided that I must take care of what matters most. Health. Without it, how can we take care of our dearest beloved ones, those who matter the most to us and also other important things in life?

If you have read my latest blogpost LIFE CHANGES you would know that I’ve been diagnosed with a number of sicknesses including a chronic illness. All this and more has forced me to take even better care of myself and really focus on something that I haven’t been focusing on as much as I say I want to. My health.

I have let everything else get in the way of my own health and overall well-being for the longest time and it’s time to make major changes in my life to focus more on personally getting better physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

I'm determined to continue to do so and not to continue to sacrifice my own health for other things again. The thing that I'm worried about is that as a human being, we are just so forgetful about this kind of things. I mean I've forgotten to take care of myself, countless times. And really, with all the meds that I'm taking right now, I really feel that I'm even more forgetful at times and as I'm writing this, I hope that one day if I forget this again I will at least remember to read this post and redirect my focus. If I don't, maybe someone can just help send this post to me so that it will be a reminder for my own self.

Anyways, below is a snippet video I edited from the full video of a social experiment which was conducted a few months ago by Max Factor for the #UnlockingRealWomen campaign. The closest person to us were called and they had to guess who the person is behind one of our important object that symbolises the most important thing to us behind our roles. So they managed to dig in into a part of me that I've never actually shared before, the things that make me happy and at peace yet it is something that even the closest to me didn't know about.

They asked me for 3 names of my best friends so I gave the names of some of my best friends who are really like my sisters who have known me for over 20 years : Ruzana Ibrahim, Shereen Bahawi and Hasanah Hilmi. Shereen made it to the special experiment that day and it resulted in this video! Before it unfolded it was really exciting as Shereen had no idea that the campaign had anything to do with me and the object she had to comment on was mine.

The campaign started a few months ago and Max Factor wanted to unlock what it means to be a Real Woman. Through a social experiment, they wanted to make people realise that women are more than just the roles expected of them by society, and that they have their own dreams and aspirations.

I’m so honoured to be a part of this meaningful campaign to unlock our real selves together with Lisa Surihani, Kavita Sidhu and Ling Oo and I’m very happy that Max Factor (@maxfactormy) wants to remind us of who we are behind our roles.
