Amazing Women of Modest Fashion in London

9:44:00 AM

London Modest Fashion Week hosted by Haute Elan just happened last weekend on the 17th and 18th February 2018. Other than having aere's fashion show as the opening slot on 17th February 2018 which I have just blogged about in my post aere's First Show in London - LMFW 2018, I had also gotten the chance to meet a lot of amazing women in the modest fashion industry. And this is the day after aere hosted the breakfast which I blogged about in aere London Breakfast with Inspiring Ladies. There were just so many amazing individuals and it was amazing to build relationships and connections with different individuals for the love of modest fashion from different countries, different backgrounds, faith, religion and race. It felt a little empowering too, knowing that all these women from all walks of life could come together and have a common cause and goal. We all have our different stories and different struggles but we all came and participated in the name of fashion. Here in this post I'm just sharing some of them whom I have met during the 2 days at the #HauteElanxLMFW event.

So let me start by sharing who I met first right after aere's show.

After the opening ceremony, aere's slot was the opening show scheduled at 2.45 pm called "The Best of Global Modest Fashion" together with fellow respected Malaysian brand Mimpikita, as well as Amal Al Raisi, Kiran Fathima Ayub, Samah Abayas and Till We Cover.

For the opening show there was an opening speech by Romanna Bint-Abubaker, Founder of Haute-Elan.com and London Modest Fashion Week, but I was backstage so I didnt hear her introducing the special guests who were there at the show. Other dignatories and special guests included Norjuma Binti Habib Mohamed of Malaysia, Muna Abu Sulayman of Saudi Arabia, HRH Sara Al Madani of UAE and Lindsay Lohan.

The first person that I actually met right after aere's show straight from the backstage was actually Lindsay Lohan! I bumped into Lindsay by complete councidence. I was just about to go out of the backstage with Pat and Haz, and as Pat was leading the way out of the backstage and pulled the black curtain to find a way out, there she was... The lovely, elegant and demure Lindsay Lohan in an all black outfit complete with a black scarf! A beautiful surprise indeed. Seriously, the movie Parent Trap immediately flash backed in my head when I saw her, it was one of my favourite childhood movies so how can I not love Lindsay!? Used to watch the movie on repeat when I was younger.

That was when I first found out that Lindsay was at the front row of aere's show and she actually watched the show. When I left the backstage the fashion show was still going on so it was a good thing that I managed to meet her before it was really crowded outside! We managed to pass some of aere's goodies to her and let me just hope that she loves what we gave her. I also found out there and then that she has actually been living in Dubai for about 3 years now and was also wearing some full on halal cosmetics that day! Whoaaah. I sure hope that I get to meet her again some day.

Thanks to Romanna bint Abu Baker (@romannabintabubaker) (who is in both shots of me and Lindsay) for bringing Lindsay to the opening LMFW show. So grateful to have her at aere's first show in London. Thank you Romanna for inviting aere to be a part of this year's LMFW. I remember we first met at your Haute Elan showroom in 2016 during the bloggers event held by Haute Elan after I went for Pure London the first time. We were then invited to the LMFW at Saatchi last year but only decided to come this year as it was already too hectic and tight last year. I am glad I decided to participate this year as it was good exposure for aere and I really did meet so many people from different backgrounds during the event and at the booth and got so many positive feedbacks from people from all over the world. It takes a lot to continue with LMFW for the second year despite the many challenges and stresses behind the scenes, so thank you for having us this year!

I also met the Brazilian Hannah Lancry Sufrin (@chansufrin) the Founder of House of Lancry who's booth was just next to aere's booth. Found out a bit more about her when I  attended a talk titled Leading Female Entrepreneurs of Faith on the second day featuring her as a speaker as well as Vivy Yusof and Bushra Shaikh moderated by Professor Reina Lewis (who had a talk on Commodification of Religion and Trends in Modest Fashion). I approached Hannah and spoke to her, she is an orthodox Jew and she is so sweet and I love that by meeting her it further proves that modest fashion goes beyond any religious background. People always associate modest fashion with just Muslims but in fact modest fashion transcends religion, faith, backgrounds and beliefs. We don't need to be a certain faith to actually appreciate modest fashion.

I talked about this topic in a little more detail with the British art historian and author Professor Reina Lewis the Artscom Centenary Professor of Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts London, who has been researching and writing about Muslims and modest fashion for over 12 years and her most recent book is about Muslim Fashion : Contemporary Style Cultures. I mentioned to her that modest fashion is so subjective and that was the start of our lengthy conversation about modest fashion and how  it transcends religion, and we talked about a lot more things related to modest fashion before she visited aere’s booth. But if I share about that here it's going to be so longwinded and it will be a lengthy discussion. Professor Reina mentioned about interviewing me for her research on modest fashion as she said that she found my views on modest fashion interesting and I felt so honoured yet humbled when she said it. I mean, she's a Professor at the London College of Fashion, how can I not feel so honoured!

I also met Juma the CEO of Aidijuma, she was at aere's booth after I came out from meeting Lindsay near the backstage/VIP area and then she approached me and wanted to take a photo! Of course I would want to take a photo with her. She is my senior in university. The last time we met was at Harrods in KL for Hijup's blogger event with Dian Pelangi. We took a few photos and gosh on that day my eyes were a bit red because of the dreaded conjunctivitis that returned to bug me again, but at that point I didn't care anymore. I took selfies and what nots. Also only found out after the LMFW event that her company acquired the majority stake in Haute Elan. Congratulations on the big move!!!

Active public speaker and humanitarian Mariah Idrissi gave a talk on The Role of Influencers in Young Women's Lives on the first day. I missed that as there were so many people at aere's booth after the show so I couldn't really leave the booth. I did not even eat the whole of that day, straight after the fashion show I was just attending to the endless stream of guests that came to our booth after watching our fashion show until the husband bought me a drink and forced me to drink at the end of the day. I last met Mariah at the Dubai Modest fashion Week last December 2017 and last year we sat next to each other at the front row of the first London Modest Fashion week 2017 at the Saatchi Gallery. That was how we first met and she is very well known as the first hijabi model for H&M as well as a social activist. It just so happened that BBC was interviewing her right in front of aere’s booth and it was a long interview and when she came to the booth they recorded her visit to the booth as well.

And of course Vivy Yusof, I have mentioned this many times before but Vivy believed in aere and myself when not many did. And she mentioned 3 years go jokingly that one day she would like to watch aere's fashion show in London. and it actually happened last weekend! It's surreal. And I enjoyed her talk on Day 2 of LMFW and proud of the superwoman that she is! Proud of you Vivy!

I also met the amazing and talented Indonesians Dian Pelangi, Ria Miranda and Jenahara Nasution and watched their show on saturday night. It's just a few hours after aere's show and all I can say is they are all so talented and creative in different ways. I enjoyed watching the show.  A day before the show, I also bumped into them just after aere's breakfast event during a CNY lunch with FV and other Malaysian brands in London. I was in the restaurant waiting for my food when I saw them outside looking at the menu. I immediately went out to greet them! Was super excited and happy to see them! As I always am. The last time I met Dian was at Singapore Fashion Week when we both showcased there in October 2017 and last I met Ria was at Dubai Modest Fashion Week when we both showcased there in December 2017. I'm always so happy and excited when I get to meet these bubbly and cheerful ladies!

Anyways, these are just some of the amazing women I met in modest fashion. I have so many more to share and I hope I get to find the time to do so soon!!!
